Insulation

Where to insulate first if money is tight

Heat goes UP. So always start in the ceiling — best return per dollar by a country mile.

Heat rises. In a NZ home with no ceiling insulation, you can lose 30–35% of the heat you've paid to generate straight out the roof. That's why ceiling first, always.

The priority order
  1. Ceiling — biggest single win. R3.6 Pink Batts or equivalent. Often eligible for the Warmer Kiwi Homes 90% co-funded grant.
  2. Underfloor — second biggest. Cold floors = cold rooms. R1.4–R2.0 polyester underlay or pumped foam.
  3. Pipe and cylinder lagging — costs $50, saves hundreds.
  4. Wall insulation — only worth it during a renovation when the linings are off.
  5. Glazing — last on the list. Hugely expensive vs the saving. Curtains and pelmets first.
Free money — Warmer Kiwi Homes

If your home was built before 2008 and you own it, the government covers 90% of the cost of ceiling and underfloor insulation. Heat pump installation is also covered up to $3,450. Always check your eligibility before paying for either.
